Pole Use & Poles as Aids

Wedge Wedeling using coordinated pole plants
Carry no poles, fake pole plant with hand action
Swing poles forward but don’t touch the snow
Plant pole at end of turn when leg flexion is greatest (relate to radius eg: Short)
Plant pole while coming up with extension of legs (relate to speed eg. Larger arcs)
Double pole plants
Plant both poles on the same side
Plant poles on wrong side, opposite pole plants
Hold poles midway down the shaft, Dwarf Turns
Plant poles in vertical manner, with extreme forward swing of the basket
Plant pole on one side only, skip the other
Hold arms wide but plant pole near the ski
Pole plants with a light touch and then a jab
Plant poles – leave poles in snow for delayed periods of time
Try to plant poles deliberately out of rhythm with body movement and turns

Use poles as visual aids – hold “x” poles high above head, have students watch them while skiing down to you
Touch pole lightly to promote glide, plant pole aggressively to promote blocking
Partner, Group Skiing Games
Human rotating slaloms
Line rotation of people – skiers ski down in front of spread out group. Leader sets new task each run
Synchronised turns – front to back
Opposing turns – figure 8 each other
Traverse side by side, downhill partner pulls on uphill partner
Synchronised formations – Diamonds, triangles, boxes. Vary the people in positions
Set a track first, ask person to follow it or figure 8 it afterwards
Buddy pull short swings. Connect skiers with bamboo poles. Follower does short swings while the leader does either straight run or a wedge
Ski side by side holding a bamboo pole horizontally
Ski in a line tandem with two bamboo poles
